  8. This is information about a new audiocard for the Amiga.

  14. The ParSID is a piece of hardware designed to hook up to the
  15. parallell port of a computer.
  16.  
  17. It allows you to connect up to 8 SID-Chip to your computer,
  18. and to access them in a very easy and convenient way.
  19.  
  20. The SID is an old chip designed by Bob Yannes back at the early 80'ies,
  21. to produce the sound in microcomputers like the famous Commodore 64.
  22. Because of the many many great composers that where hired to compose
  23. songs for the games on that particular computer, the capabilities of
  24. the SID were quickly spread among "normal" people, who came to remember
  25. the games for their music, and not for the actual gameplay.

  28. The SID is capable of doing alot of things that todays "Digital Analog"
  29. synthesizers like the JP-8000 brag about, for example:

  31. * 3 independent oscillators with waveforms such as:
  32.     · Sawtooth
  33.     · Triangle
  34.     · Pulse/Square
  35.     · Noise
  36. * Hardsync oscillators
  37. * "Ringmodulation"
  38. * 12 dB/Octave rolloff filters:
  39.     · Lowpass
  40.     · Bandpass
  41.     · Highpass
  42. * And alot more...

  44. The main reason for the game music to sound "computermade", is that
  45. the composer only have ONE single SID to compose on. This forces him
  46. to cheat alot, and to only use the filter on one oscillator for example.

  48. How do you make a 4-note chord with only 3 oscillators? Together with
  49. a bassline and some drums? Not to forget the lead..
  50.  
  51. With 8 SID's it's a whole different thing! Now you suddenly have
  52. 24(!) oscillators, 8 filters, and no additional noise except from
  53. the SID itself!

  55. Add a comprehensive composing tool and you have a pretty darn good
  56. sounding synthesizer!

  58. There will also be a replacement for playsid.library that will support
  59. the card, so you can listen to SID-songs for real on the Amiga using
  60. your favourite player like HippoPlayer!
